Even Though Your Wounds Are Not Your Fault, Your Healing Is Still Your Responsibility

Pain is inevitable throughout life although to carry it unnecessarily fuels suffering. Even though our wounds are not our fault, our healing remains within our control. You're no doubt reading this since you identified with the title, perhaps your own wounds or someone close to you has been hurt? Healing is a difficult and yet liberating journey of self-discovery. Forgiveness teaches us self-resiliency and self-reliance. It awakens us to a greater love and peace that resides within us.
It is why I am drawn to the words of the spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle who wrote on his Instagram account recently: "If you cannot accept what is outside, then accept what is inside. If you cannot accept the external condition, accept the internal condition. This means: Do not resist the pain. Allow it to be there. Surrender to the grief, despair, fear, loneliness, or whatever form the suffering takes. Witness it without labelling it mentally. Embrace it. Then see how the miracle of surrender transmutes deep suffering into deep peace. This is your crucifixion. Let it become your resurrection and ascension." Tolle reminds us not to resist our pain but surrender to it in order to transform our suffering. I realise this advice goes against what people want to hear. I equate it to running towards a lion instead of fleeing for your life. Nevertheless, by facing our fears we allow pain to move through us and realise pain is not who we really are; it is an emotional state we have held on to and kept alive.
Beyond our pain lies an ever expansive love which at its essence is our true nature. Even though our wounds may not be our fault, our healing remains our responsibility. To heal means to accept what happened to us and discover our true selves through the healing process. Let me be very clear: acceptance does not mean we like what took place. It simply means to acknowledge the events and work towards healing ourselves of the pain associated with it. People might say: "I wish the event never occurred because I wouldn't have to deal with the anguish, let alone the long road to recovery." Whilst that may be true, if we believe everything happens for a reason, what if our pain is there to teach us self-compassion and forgiveness? Perhaps the lesson is not so much about the transgression that took place but how we love and nurture ourselves when we are wounded. How do you feel about this? I know it may be difficult to accept especially if your wounds are fresh. Let it sit for a while and try to see your situation through the lens of love and healing.
Dr. Mario Martinez, a clinical neuropsychologist, writes in The Mindbody Code: How To Change The Beliefs That Limit Your Health, Longevity, And Success that "When you're wounded, especially by significant people in your life, your empowerment is challenged, and your worthiness is called into question. The vulnerability your loss of empowerment creates within you allows the wound to damage your worthiness." To reclaim our empowerment and worthiness once more, we must cross the threshold of pain and let go of our hurt and anguish. It's essential you understand, I am not inviting you to forget, but to forgive yourself for being caught up what took place. Through the healing process, we restore any sense of shame, guilt and anger we inherited as a result of our wounds. Dr. Martinez further explains, instead of trying to forgive the perpetrator or minimise the events of the past, we should focus on re-establishing our sense of self which is more important: "Rather than forgiving the perpetrator or minimizing the intensity of the misdeed, you recover the empowerment and self-worthiness you thought had been taken from you."
What are your thoughts by now? Are you willing to take ownership of the past in the way you process it? There is rarely ever a right way to heal our wounds. Though, it requires courage to appreciate that our emotional wounds are not permanent and exist to awaken us to the loving presence within us. This presence can never be taken away or deprived through physical or nonphysical acts because at its essence, this is the foundation of who we are. As a result, we lean into this oneness of love, knowing like a net which supports a trapeze artist should they fall, we will be guided through our healing journey. Our priority is to nurture ourselves foremost through the eyes of kindness and compassion however painful our wounds may be. After all, the love within us is far greater than our wounds because it is the greatest purifier and healer there is.

How a Letter to an Editor Written in 1980 Fueled Prescription Opioid Crisis in US

A 1980 letter, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is believed to have given wings to the current prescription opioid crisis in America. The letter summarized the study conducted to determine the risks of narcotic addiction. The researchers examined 39,946 patients, of whom 11,882 were subjected to a brief narcotic intervention. It was observed that there were only four cases wherein patients with no prior history had developed addiction.
The drugs in question were meperidine, Percodan, and hydromorphone. Authors Jane Porter and Hershel Jick from Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program of Boston University Medical Center, said, "We conclude that despite widespread use of narcotic drugs in hospitals, the development of addiction is rare in medical patients with no history of addiction."
Unfortunately, the entire purpose of the study was taken out of context and was used to fuel the myth that opioids are safe without any risk of addiction. Pharmaceutical companies and drug makers have cited the content of the letter numerous times (a recent study indicates that it has been cited more than 600 times) to market their products. Some have even gone to the extent of pointing out that opioids are perfectly safe in outpatient settings, a point that has been countered by one of the authors.
In a note to the Associated Press, Jick explained that since the study was conducted in hospital settings and looked only at patients who had received opioids for short duration therefore, it "has no bearing on long-term outpatient use."
Pain used as excuse to prescribe opioids
More than 52,000 drug overdosing mortalities were reported in 2015 with 63 percent deaths attributed to opioids. Overdosing proved to be more fatal than automobile accidents (more than 38,000 mortalities) and gun violence (36,000 mortalities) during the year. The 2015 numbers even surpassed the mortality rates when the dreaded HIV/AIDS was at its peak and 43,000 people reportedly lost their lives to it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 91 Americans succumb to opioid overdose every day.
Pharmaceutical companies have taken it upon themselves to promote drugs such as OxyContin and Percocet for chronic pain despite suggestions by researchers that opioid painkillers aren't fully effective and have serious side effects. It is also interesting to note that ever since Purdue Pharma introduced OxyContin in the 1990s, there has been a surge in the way prescription drugs have been doled out. As more Americans suffer from pain, these companies have tapped the opportunity to persuade health care professionals to prescribe more opioids. As a result, many physicians end up overprescribing and risking their patients' lives.
Mortified by how the pharmaceutical companies unscrupulously used the content of the letter to serve their own ends, Jick said, "I'm essentially mortified that that letter to the editor was used as an excuse to do what these drug companies did. They used this letter to spread the word that these drugs were not very addictive."
Controlling prescription drug misuse
Pain is a relative concept and it is open to interpretation. In the absence of any biological measure, physicians prescribe medication based on what they deem fit and how an individual responds to questions. Even if opioids are prescribed to treat pain, doctors should closely monitor the doses, trace the patient's history of drug use and inform them about harmful effects of long-term use. Leftover opioids at home should be discarded before they get into the hands of a child and causes mayhem. Self-medication through prescription drugs should be strictly avoided as it may lead to physical and mental health complications.

Why Do I Feel So Stuck In Life?

Life happens to all of us! We look up and so much time has gone by and we realize that "this is not what I planned for my life". "This is definitely not where I thought I would be at this point in my life!" Disappointment will often set in and then discouragement and distractions begin to cause us to feel as though we are stuck in our current stage of life as we appear to have lost sight of our dreams and goals. This is one of the statements posted on most of our marketing materials and website. It is from a conversation that took place a few years ago with someone that shared their heart with us as they attempted to make sense of their life.
Well, I hope that I can help you as you are trying to understand why you are where you are currently. I can assure you that it is never too late to make a course correction in your life; it may not appear to be easy and I am not promising that it will be easy but, it will certainly be worth the effort. Shall we begin?
Why Do I Feel So Stuck In Life? Where Did The Bread Crumbs Go?
For some of us our life seemed to be so clear; we were going to graduate from high school, go to college and land that dream job! Some of us planned on having the "American Dream" in the sense that, we would graduate from college, have a higher than average paying job, buy that dream house that you always wanted and have your three point five kids and a dog, cat, maybe a goldfish or a bird even; I don't know but you had a plan is the point.
For some; your dream was centered on becoming that independent person that lived by their own rules as they blazed through life living the kind of life that others would envy. Then there are those who were going to change the world! Fix those things that you saw as broken; you were going to be the change agent for social injustice; you were going to fix what you saw as a broken education system, or bring accountability to government-local, state or federal. You planned on revolutionizing the entertainment, sports, arts, medical, and literary fields.
So, here we are. When we turn around and look back at our lives we can't help but wonder "where did the time go?" We often evaluate our lives based on where we are currently and where we wanted to be at this stage of our lives. But we had a plan! We had this thing all figured out, what happened? What happen to me? This is not how I imagined my life would be. And then disappointment begins to set in followed by discouragement as we survey our life choices and start to feel stuck as we realize that we lost sight of our dreams and goals. There are a few of us who may feel like they gave up on their dreams or compromised their dreams for lesser endeavors.
Resentment soon creeps in and we are invited to play the "Blame Game" which can be a very nasty and destructive game. That blame game is a hot mess! When we reach this point in our lives; we can't figure out what happened to our well thought out plan? We begin to have these internal conversations that tend to excuse our lack of perceived success and focus on how other people have failed to help us succeed. Those internal conversations can be very condemning and cause us to take on a defeated perspective-meaning that we (you and I) are the problem due to some undetermined defect in the deepest core of who we are. Some of us even wrote our plan out and for those "A-type" people; you may have included charts and graphs. Keep reading, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not a train.
Why Do I Feel So Stuck In Life? What has happened To Me?
Like I stated at the beginning of this post; "life happens to us all." So, now we are at a place where some of us have started to have regrets. Many people who reach this stage in the process have resigned to just sticking with what they are doing now because it is too late start something new. They have come to the conclusion that it is too late to chase after their lost dreams, "dreams are for kids" they often think as they continue to live in quiet desperation hoping things will change.
I was told a very powerful and thought provoking story earlier this year as I volunteered to help with a 5k run to help raise money to provide clean, drinkable water for a Massai tribe in Narok, Kenya. I was told from a very reliable source that the people of that particular village have developed a way of thinking that is a direct result of the poor quality of water in their area.
Whenever a baby is born it is not given a name; they will not waste a name on the child until they are absolutely positive that the baby will live. In that village, when a person is given a family name, that name is permanent- that means that when that person dies, no one can say that name anymore. So, they will not waste a name until they know that life will continue.
Many of you are a lot like that African village. You have seen how so many of your dreams and plans start out good only to fail. Maybe you have experienced that not one single thing that you have attempted to do ever made it off the ground. Some have had their dreams shot down, tore down, and stomped into oblivion as soon as you worked up the courage to share it with someone. There are others who experienced unimaginable and unspeakable things done to them. Survivors of domestic abuse, there are people who have overcome substance abuse or seemingly debilitating injuries and illnesses.
You do not dare to dream again, that is the last thing on your mind right now. You are just trying to find some sense of normalcy. You dare not waste a name on anymore dreams; you will not give it a name because you cannot bear to see one more thing fail in your life! But, even as you are reading this you can feel something stirring deep inside of you. You can try to ignore it, you can try to push that feeling down into the recesses of your inner being but, it keeps struggling to break out. It is almost as if it is screaming at the top of its lungs to be acknowledged!
We make attempts to retrace our steps eager to find the exact moment when things went wrong. We hope that somehow we can pinpoint that exact instant and by some means reset our lives and everything will be okay. It doesn't work like that unfortunately; but there are some things that we can do that have the ability to change the trajectory of our lives.
Why Do I Feel So Stuck In Life? Change Can Come.
In my line of work you can find so many examples of what is commonly referred to as stages of change models. These models simply chart the various processes or stages one takes when making changes in their lives. This is a widely used tool when dealing with addictions. As we go through this process at a brisk pace, I hope that you can begin to see that there's still time and opportunities to see your dreams come to fruition.
  1. This is when you're not thinking about making changes in your life. This is where impairment has taken place for whatever reason and you have rejected the notion of even needing to change things in your life. Not a good place to be in.
  2. This is the place where most of you reading this are right now at this moment. You're tired of being in that place of impairment or hurt; you're serious about the need for you to start making some positive changes in your life.
  3. Now you're at the place in our life when you want to get the heck outta your rut, so you start looking for strategies and people to help you to leave your place of hurt, that place of being stuck (impairment).
  4. Yeah baby! This is the place where you start to implement those things that are necessary to bring about desired changes in your life and you begin to experience movement. You are no longer stuck!
  5. Hey! Now we're moving on up like "George and Wheezy! This is where you are achieving most of the goals that you have set and doing so with very little assistance. You have left your place of impairment and you're looking good!
Now, there's something that is very important to that I need you to remember; there's another stage that some don't address and I get why but, I feel that you need to read what I'm about to write. There will be times when you may find yourself back at the place of impairment. Do not panic, stop all negative internal conversations and go straight back to using the strategies that you have learned to becoming unstuck and examine how you lost focus so that you're aware of that particular pitfall if and when it shows up again. I am a firm believer in the idea that you can use failure as a tool, a learning opportunity if you view failure appropriately.
Failure, even if you are the reason for your perceived failure can become a teachable moment if you look at the situation properly. When you choose to view failure as a learning opportunity, you are actually continuing your process of change which in turn keeps you from feeling like you're stuck. I hope this helps you in your journey towards becoming unstuck.
Disappointment, discouragement and distractions can cause us to become stuck in life as we lose sight of our dreams and goals. For more information, please visit http://dreamagainrestorativeprograms.org/

Help! I Can't Sleep!

Have you ever had one of those nights? You know the kind; the constant tossing and turning, the tight muscles, the inability shut your mind off? It seems like that stupid alarm clock is staring you in the face. If only you could just relax and let it all go instead of worrying if you'll have enough coffee to make it through tomorrow.
Sleep is a strange thing. We need it, we crave it, we fight it, we do our best to control it instead of it controlling us. Unfortunately, our bodies don't function as they should when we are sleep deprived. The crux of it is, ongoing research has now established that not getting enough sleep is detrimental to our health. When we sleep our bodies repair vital organs and body systems, such as our adrenal glands, and cement our long-term memory while helping us to make sense of the days events.
For example, lack of sleep can severely weaken your immune system, accelerate tumor growth, cause a pre-diabetic state which can make you feel hungry even when you've already eaten. Even one night of poor sleep can impair your memory, decrease your problem solving ability and impair performance on physical and mental tasks, not to mention how these issues can manifest themselves in your body.
The average person needs six to eight hours of sleep each night. For most people sleeping under six hours will actually accelerate aging and increase your risk of diabetes. But everyone is different, some need more and some need less, if you feel as if you're dragging during the day, you need a full eight hours of sleep.
So the question becomes, when we are stressed and can't get a good night's sleep what are we to do? While nutrition, exercise, meditation and how we think about our life are major factors in our health and stress levels, whether we get enough sleep may be the most deciding factor in our health and well-being. Here are some suggestions to help you get out of the stress rut and get some much-needed sleep.
Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.
Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible When light hits the eyes, it disrupts the circadian rhythm of the pineal gland and production of melatonin and seratonin. Also, there should be as little light in the bathroom as possible so you aren't jolted by bright light (think Gizmo and Gremlins) if you have to get up in the middle of the night.
No TV right before bed Even better, get the TV out of the bedroom or even out of the house, completely. It is too stimulating to the brain and it will take longer to fall asleep. Also disruptive of pineal gland function for the same reason as above.
Read something spiritual or religious This will help to relax. Don't read anything stimulating, such as a mystery or suspense novel, as this may have the opposite effect. In addition, if you are really enjoying a suspenseful book, you might wind up unintentionally reading for hours, instead of going to sleep.
Pay off debt Make a plan to pay off what is burdening you. It's hard to sleep when we are worried about how we are going to make those payments. Devising and implementing a plan of attack will empower you, making you more relaxed that everything will be alright now that there is a plan to work from.
Avoid toxic and negative people or situations If you are constantly bombarded with stressful people or situations, find a way to remove yourself. Either discuss your situation with them and let them know how you feel so you can work on improving the situation or you may have to eliminate them from your circle, even for a short time.
Use breathing techniques Like EFT, breathing exercises help refocus our minds and allow our parasympathetic nervous system to come forward. This will help relax you and regain control of your thoughts.
Bring ALL thoughts under YOUR control Negative thinking leads to more stress. Most of the negative thoughts are about what you can't control anyway, so why not take control of those thoughts? Write a list of all the negative thoughts that go through your mind. Now, take some time and restate those thoughts in a positive way. Something like, "Why did I just try to do that? I did it wrong, I should have known I wouldn't get it right." Now try saying, "Oopsies, I just messed up. But I'm trying something new, I will get better at it."
Write in a journal Keep a journal or spiral notebook next to your bed. When you find yourself having thoughts racing through your mind, write them down. It doesn't matter what it is. It could be as simple as get milk tomorrow at the store, or as extreme as admitting you feel stressed and hopeless. Just the act of writing things down removes them from constantly coursing through your mind.
There are many ways to deal with stress and bring your body, mind and spirit back into balance. Because stress is a major factor in the majority of health problems plaguing people today, taking steps to learn how to manage the traps that drag us into the spiral of sleepless nights will empower us to take the steps needed to climb out. Not only that, being able to manage stress will help your mental well-being. Being a positive thinker has an effect on our health because our bodies actually respond to our emotions on a cellular level.
There are many pills out there promising to reduce your stress and/or help you sleep. The problem is, some of them can be harmful or addictive. Learn how to use any of the techniques above in a way that works for you and you won't have to resort to dangerous drugs to bring on that lovely slumber.
So, bottom line, give yourself the tools you need to combat stress so you can get some much-needed rest.
If you are looking for supplements, seek a reputable company that has a long track record with many published studies, not only in-house but third party as well, and see what they have to offer. It's Not the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Back in the day when I was on the radio playing music, like most stations, this time of year we played a whole lot of Christmas music. One of the most popular, and I still hear it today, was Andy Williams song, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
Andy sings his heart out about kids jingle belling, good cheer, friends, parties, and caroling out in the snow. He croons of much mistletoeing, and hearts glowing when loved ones are near. It's the most wonderful time of the year!
But Not For Everyone!
Yes, it is a wonderful time of the year for lots of people, but sadly, not for everyone. Out and about, you and I will see people carrying holiday packages, but we may not know what they are carrying on the inside. It's a great season to to exhibit love and compassion to all.
This time of year, it's difficult for people who have no one close to them to share the joy of the season. For some, it's their first Christmas without their spouse; for others it may be the first holiday since their divorce; still others have no family close by.
Some find this time of year financially challenging with pressures of sending holiday cards or buying gifts they feel they just have to buy. Others wish they could fly to be with loved ones, but the airfare for them is too costly.
And then there are the children. How many little ones will only be with one parent this year, because last year they were with their other divorced parent? Kids many times don't show it outwardly, but it hurts. And it's also painful for a parent who doesn't have their child with them too.
Love!
If you are in any of those categories, I send you love this holiday season! With God's help you will get through it! On the other hand, if none of this applies to you, keep in mind it does for others; keep your heart full of love, compassion and tenderness this season.
Through all the myriad of decorations, parties, banquets, etc., Jesus is the reason right? Isn't all of this supposed to be about the savior coming into the world? "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
God's motivation for sending Jesus was love! Jesus' motivation for what he did was love. So, as you're out amid all the hustle bustle, hearing songs of, "much mistletoeing" and "kids jingle belling," follow Jesus' example by bringing as much love as you can to all those around you.
This season, why not bring others the most wonderful love of the year!

Do This One Thing To Control Your Mind - Dr. Joe Dispenza Leave You Speechless

How to Take Control of Your Mindset to Increase Productivity and Your Rais

How to take control of your mindset begins with understanding what mindset is. Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success. Mindsets are beliefs-beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities like your intelligence, your talents, your personality. In the following article, we will review exactly how to take control of your mindset to increase productivity and your raise.
First, you must know there are two different kinds of mindsets: growth and fixed mindset.
People with fixed mindsets believe their basic qualities like intelligence or talent are fixed and cannot be developed. They believe talent alone creates success without efforts. They spend their time judging themselves, worrying about how adequate rather than developing themselves. They tend to stay in their comfort zones because they see failure as a weakness rather than an opportunity to strengthen those weaknesses. With a fixed mindset, the perception is that you have a certain amount of brains and cleverness or you don't.
People with growth mindsets believe their most basic qualities can be developed through passionate dedication and determined effort which contribute towards success and achievement. They understand that no one has ever accomplished great success-not Edison, Bill Gates or Michael Jordan-without years of practice and learning. This viewpoint creates a passion for learning which is essential for great accomplishments. With the growth mindset, the perception is that brains and talent are just the starting point to creating motivation and productivity.
What does mindset look like in your work life? Your fixed mindset sounds like this: "You miss deadlines all the time. This means you are a loser." "My boss constantly criticizes me. This means I'm not good enough at what I do." "Betty never meets her quota; this means I'm better than she is." Your growth mindset sounds like this: "His workshop presentation is better than mine. What can I learn to improve?" "My co-worker isn't making her quota this month. What can I do to help her improve?"
The views you adopt profoundly affect the way you lead your personal and professional life.
You can adopt the fixed mindset that you only have a certain amount of intelligence, personality, and moral character and that's it. You will go through life constantly trying to prove yourself-at work, at home, and at relationships. You will be constantly evaluating every situation: Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or dumb? Will I be accepted or rejected? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?
Or, you can adopt the growth mindset that basic traits-initial talents, aptitudes, interests or temperaments-are starting points for development and growth through application and experience. With this belief, you do realize everyone can not become Einstein but a person's true potential is unknown and impossible to see what can be accomplished with years of passion, effort and training.
Tune into your fixed mindset but only take the actions of your growth mindset in your personal and work life.
Don't waste time proving how great you are, apt to get better. Avoid hiding deficiencies instead overcome them. Look for friends or partners who challenge you to grow rather stroke your ego. Never dread hard work, learn to embrace it. Instead of seeing obstacles, see them as opportunities. Seek experiences that will stretch you not just keep you in your comfort zones. The passion for stretching yourself, even during some of the most challenging times, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.
The growth mindset is your answer to how to take control of your mindset to increase your productivity and your raise.

Your Wounds Are Your Gifts

One thing that one may have heard, if they are into self-development or on the healing path, is that their wounds are their gifts. Now, if one is in a lot of pain, it can be hard for them to get their head around this.
This could be a time when they are struggling with the fear of abandonment, feel worthless, and even have moments when they feel suicidal, for instance. What this could show is that their early years were anything but nurturing.
A Focus
So through being in so much pain, their main priority could be to find a way to change their life. Moving on from what is taking place is then going to be the only thing that matters, finding their so-called 'gifts' will be the last thing on their mind.
In a way, it can be similar to someone who is extremely hungry told that being this way will allow them to find things that are really precious. They will be hungry and everything else can be seen as being irrelevant.
Staying With It
However, as long as they keep going and don't give up, they are likely to find that their experience on this earth starts to change. This can be something that takes place with the assistance of a therapist or a healer.
The months and the years will pass by, and some of their inner wounds might not be as strong as they once were. If there are certain wounds that are still painful, having wounds that are not might make their life easier.
A New Outlook
At this point, they might start to see that due to the wounds that they have had, it has caused them to take their own path in life. As a result of the pain that they were in and the difficulties that they had, they might have simply not been able to go down the 'normal' path.
This might have been frustrating at the time but now they might be grateful that they have been able to step off the beaten track. And while they might still carry a fair amount of pain, this pain might not be so powerful that they are unable to experience inner peace or to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Settling Down
What this can also mean is that their wounds start to heal faster than they did before, even though their need to heal them is not as strong. This can be seen as something that is called the healing paradox.
It simply comes down to the fact that when one is attached to an outcome, it is less likely to take place. Yet, when they can let go of the need for something to happen, it is more likely to occur.
An Unexpected Outcome
Along with one taking a different route to others, there are a number of things that they can attain by having wounds and healing these wounds. For one thing, they can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and humanity as a whole.
Not only this, they can end up with a level of empathy and compassion that would probably be hard to attain any other way. They will have been to hell and back and know what it is like to truly suffer, which is why they will have the ability to understand other peoples pain and suffering and to assist them, if they so choose.
Final Thoughts
What seemed like a burden at one point in time can be seen as a blessing at another point in time. One could come to believe that they needed to go through what they went through in order to gain the understandings and the skills that they needed to fulfil their purpose on this earth.

If they hadn't done the work that they did on themselves, though, what took place would have defined them instead of redefined them. This would have prolonged their pain and set them up to lead a miserable existence.
