How To Create Healthy Boundaries

If you're sensitive, like I am, you might very well struggle with boundaries. Perhaps you have very few boundaries. Perhaps your boundaries are weak, or full of holes. Maybe you've constructed some extra rigid boundaries to protect yourself from being hurt.
No matter what type of boundaries you have, if they're too tight, too loose, or too weak, you won't feel good. And, true happiness might feel completely out of reach.
Good, strong, healthy boundaries are crucial for everyone, especially sensitive people. Here are some suggestions to create them.
Some tips before you get started:
Determine Your Limits -- The clearer you are about your limits, the easier it will be to determine your boundaries.
Use Your Feelings as Your guide - Notice how you feel when you think about or experience something. The stronger your feelings, either positive or negative, the more you need some sort of boundary to help limit or expand your experience.
Be Direct - Be clear and direct when communicating your boundaries with others.
Make Self-Care a Priority - With self-care as your priority, healthy boundaries will be easier to create.
Start Small -- One boundary at a time. Just get started, the momentum will build.
For each category below, determine your limits. Decide which boundaries you will create or transform.
Time - Do you feel short of time? Do you need more time to do something you love? Do you spend too much time doing something that doesn't fulfill you, or that disrupts your emotional well-being? Make decisions on how to spend your time. Carve out time for your innermost desires. Let go of time-sucking extras and non-essential responsibilities.
Space - Sensitive people, especially, need space. Space for rest and rejuvenation. What do you need in terms of space? Do you need time alone each day? Do you need to experience nature on a regular basis? Do you need a room of your own? What can you do now to create more space in your life?
Social Life - Get clear on what depletes you and what nourishes you. If large crowds deplete you, decide how you will limit your exposure to large crowds. With people who annoy, diminish, or stress you out, how can you minimize, or alter your experiences with them? If your social boundaries feel too rigid or tight, help yourself imagine comfortable ways to loosen them up. Which boundaries need to change so you can create a balanced, enjoyable social life?
Emotional Life -- What pushes your limits emotionally? What extends you beyond your limits? Which activities cause you to stir up negativity, sadness, anger, shame, anxiety or discontent? Which experiences help you shift into a place of happiness, contentment, satisfaction, enthusiasm, optimism and love? What boundaries can you create to limit your negative experiences? How can you create boundaries to integrate more of what feels good into your life?
Health -- Which boundaries will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle? Do certain foods or activities need to be off-limits, at least some of the time? Do you need to carve out time for exercise and self-care? What will help you make your self-care a priority?
Personal Relationships -- With family members, partners, or close friends, which of your boundaries need to loosen, which ones need to tighten? How can you create healthy boundaries to improve your experience in your personal relationships?
Healthy boundaries don't happen over-night. It takes time. But by creating just one healthy boundary, you will feel immediate results. The rewards are enormous, and life-giving. It's the ultimate gift of self-love.

10 Tips for Looking Good Each Day

Some people think that looking good is about being perfectly groomed, as if from a glossy magazine. But some people look a little wild, quirky and dishevelled and yet something about them means they always look wonderful.
Here are tips for looking good each day:
- A ready smile and cheery disposition often feature high. Someone who's warm, friendly and enjoys life will radiate an inner glow and beauty.
- Be ready to say yes, be enthusiastic, join in and be willing to have a go. Attractive people often have a genuine interest in life. Have something in your diary to look forward to.
- Maintain a positive mindset by focusing on the good things that happen each day, even the small things like a stranger's smile, a compliment, the view from your window.
- Don't take things personally. Someone else's bad mood may be about stuff that's on their mind. Protect yourself from external stress.
- Look after yourself. Your health affects how you look. Exercise regularly, with breaks for nutritious food and water. Support good quality sleep; we all feel better when we've slept on a problem. Introduce positive habits; switch off your technology, allow time to relax before bed.
- Forgive yourself your shortcomings and mistakes. Value constructive criticism when a learning point's included. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would another person.
- Engage professional help to deal with any negative patterns of behaviour or issues you may have. A good counsellor or hypnotherapist can support you in becoming stronger and more confident.
- Accept help. Let friends, family or colleagues provide support, ideas and input. It may be appropriate to ask for help sometimes. Communicate regularly and invest time and attention in your relationships.
- Consider your appearance, the impression you give. We may have an everyday 'uniform' in order to dress quickly and look acceptable. Impartially assess your style. Do you need to refresh your image, your makeup? Visit a different hairdresser or barber so you're styled by a fresh pair of eyes.
- Do things that make you happy. Read a book, enjoy a hobby or interest. Listen to music or join a stimulating evening class. Things that make you happy help you to look better.
Looking good comes not just from being clean, tidy and well-groomed. It's also important to invest time and attention in your mental and emotional wellbeing too.

Choosing Your Endless

Infinite, interminable, never-ending; these are words we associate with endless. Some inspire positive emotions while others seem almost foreboding; yet all describe the same word, endless. On reflection, there are few things we actually believe are endless in life. We describe the breadth of emotions in this way when we believe a loving relationship will never be interrupted; it is infinite and we are hopeful and happy. Never-ending is frequently used to describe emotional turmoil or situations that try us beyond endurance with no acceptable solution in sight. We believe there never will be a solution and so endless becomes never-ending. How will endless describe your life?
One that is positive, hopeful and happy requires boundaries that must be established and honored. This is not always easy to do. If you grew up in an environment where boundaries were not in evidence you may not even be aware that they are missing. Worse, you may not understand the importance of having them. People who proclaim that their life is an open book may never have enjoyed boundaries in their life. Personal privacy is more than a right; it is necessary to protect thoughts, hopes and dreams in life. These most intimate thoughts should only be shared with trusted people who will support and encourage you. Those who share everything with everyone who will listen significantly decrease their odds in achieving the best they can become. It opens too many pathways to negativity that can impede the way to achieve those things; even in your closest relationships.
Good boundaries require respect and consideration from those you interact with beyond casual acquaintances. To do less breaks through the protective boundaries established and is not tolerable. Oddly enough, the people willing to crash through your boundaries are well aware of them. When this happens you can be sure that they have willfully violated this protection and chosen to disrespect them and your feelings in the process. This is where your choices enter how the word endless will apply to your life.
Pretending not to see this kind of behavior destroys your boundaries. Accepting unacceptable behavior or disrespect towards you or the things or people you care about is the primary symptom of marginalized boundaries. It is important to recognize that this has occurred and then act on it. It is an important step towards respecting yourself. A failure to do so will ensure that more of the same behavior is on the way. This can be the beginning of never-ending situations in your life.
To have an infinite 'endless' in your life is far more positive and joyful and is worth the effort to cultivate. It usually begins with respecting yourself and clearly defining what is disrespectful to that ideal. If you are unsure where to draw the line take a good look at how you protect the people in your life that you love and respect. Look closely at where you draw the line for how others must respect and treat them. That is the correct place to draw your own and then set your boundary in place. Love yourself as much as you love them; demand respect for yourself as much as you demand others respect them.
Love is a teaching as well as a learning experience in life. We learn the very best that can be given and received; we can use that to teach others how to treat us. It's important to choose your 'endless' in life.

Turn Your Fear Into a Path to Your Strength and Recharge Your Time

Finding time to work with difficult feelings like fear can ultimately recharge your energy and confidence.
And the good news is that it doesn't need to eat up a lot of your time to get there.
Indeed, as you develop the habit of looking your difficult feelings right in the eye, you'll find that it's a big time-saver and energy boost for you. You'll experience the added bonus of exercising a lot more positive, proactive control over your time, too, because you'll stop taking the long way around things as an avoidance tactic.
We'll focus specifically on fear in this post - remembering that as you work with this, you can substitute any feeling that is difficult for you.
Start here...
So, to start, here's a useful mantra. Repeat this to yourself as you begin this empowering journey: "I turn my fear into a path to my strength."
Maybe in the past, you've tried to hide your fear from sight. In fact, maybe you go so far as to deny your feelings to yourself. You would rather not think of yourself as indecisive or uncommitted.
That's a natural-enough feeling, but it's one that actually reinforces your fears and will keep you firmly stuck in them.
There's a far more productive way to approach your fears: consciously reframe them as challenges that will call you to develop new and exciting strengths! This puts them in a positive context, and, even more importantly, places you in a proactive (rather than a reactive) stance toward them. Right there you are taking back your power and putting yourself in charge.
That changes everything!
So, the next time you feel fear about saying no, don't push that fear away. Greet it as a friend with important information to share.
3 Questions
Here are 3 questions you can ask, as you pursue a deeper understanding of your fear. Ask yourself:
  • How can I turn this fear inside out? (Reframe it as an opportunity.)
  • What lesson have I been trying to avoid? (Embracing it will ground and empower you.)
  • How will I reinvent myself once I say no? (The assertiveness you develop will expand your potential.)
Let your imagination roam freely as you work these questions - the answers you receive may surprise you - and I'd love to hear your experience as you make this empowering journey!
So... are you inspired to find even more time and increase your effectiveness, efficiency and enjoyment?

Seldom Remembered Business Goal - Reaps Huge Benefits

When a New Year dawns many people set new business and personal goals.
Consider adding this goal to your list.
"Keep a positive attitude moment to moment."
In spite of the twists, turns and vicissitudes all is in right order for you and all in the Universe.
I'm sure you'll agree that positivity is missing in most everything we see in the world. It seems that more is wrong than right. Yet, this has been the case for eons. Notice that humans have persevered and created many improvements in living along the way.
In fact, 87% of what we see, hear and experience is negative. Combating the negative by creating a moment to moment positive attitude is crucial to maintain "happiness and peace-of-mind." You need to be one of the 13% who are living with a positive attitude.
With that in mind being positive and living happy with peace-of-mind sounds easy... it seems possible. Then, if you look at social media, everyone seems to be lamenting and/or worrying about this, that or something and this will bring all the negative back into your world. So then, what is a person to do, to have an attitude of positivity moment to moment?
  • Choose "Positivity"
  • Commit to a moment to moment "Positive Attitude"
  • Form a habit of being positive moment to moment.
Firstly, the moment you hear yourself have a negative thought or make a negative statement say, Cancel, Delete or Stop. Saying one of those words reminds your monkey mind to shift from old habits to a new habit. Then, rephrase your thought or statement to positivity.
If you are dealing with a situation that wasn't in your plan... Take a deep breath and say,
"All is in right order. What can I learn from this? How did I arrive here? I have the strength, courage and ability to persevere."
When you accept the situation as is, and plan your next steps you have empowered yourself to persevere and the Universe Laws are there to support you.
You can achieve positivity moment to moment by incorporating these attitudes:
  1. Show you care
  2. Accept responsibility
  3. Treat everyone, including yourself with respect
  4. Keep your word or renegotiate vs dropping the ball with an excuse or no information
  5. Think remarkable outcomes in spite of the messy world
  6. Enjoy a little craziness
"The Law of Positivity" is this...
When you have and practice a positive attitude you will become more excellent in whatever you do. Be positive, and you'll be happier!
To start and maintain your New Year with positivity set positivity as one of your goals. You will reap the rewards.

How to Say No, Even When You're Afraid To

Sometimes, saying no is the easiest thing in the world. You speak honestly and communicate clearly. As a result, you exercise a lot of positive control over your life and your time.
But sometimes the word gets caught in your throat. Breathing gets hard. You're just scared to death to say no.
How do you handle this now? Here's a quick quiz to help you understand how you might approach this stressful situation. Try jotting down how often you resort to each of these actions, using "0" for "never" and 5 for "always":
"When I feel afraid to say "no", I:
____ Put it off until the ideal time, which is never.
____ Trash myself for being fearful.
____ Fume over how impossible the other person is.
____ Push past my fears and charge blindly ahead.
____ Imply that my refusal is the other person's fault.
____ TOTAL
If your score is 0-5, saying no is not a big problem (unless you've figured out a self-defeating strategy that we missed!)
But what if your score is higher? In that case, your reluctance to say no probably hurts you even more than you know. Resentments simmer, and relationships and self-esteem suffer. Over time, anxieties compound. Paralyzing fear takes quite a toll.
There's another way to handle this impasse. You must break outworn promises you made to yourself long ago!
Start by asking yourself 3 powerful questions. Ask them as often as you need to. Let the answers bubble up, and listen to each response. They will be chock full of useful information for you!
Ask yourself:
1. Where did your fear of saying no originate? It's helpful to identify how much stronger and more autonomous you are now.
2. How did you believe silence made you safe? Give some thought to how circumstances have changed.
3. How does this trap you now? Seeing all the ways your old promise to yourself holds you back helps you replace your outworn approach with a more appropriate one.
The less you judge yourself for your fear, the more readily you'll overcome it.
So now:
* Forgive yourself for your reluctance to take risks.
* Gently affirm that those old promises to never take major risks need to be broken.
* Commit to carry the best of you forward, and list ways you might do that.
It's so exciting to build the strengths and internal structures to foster your autonomy!

The Sky Is Not the Limit - The Power Of Positivity

We often hear the phrase "The sky is the limit" and often we hear this when the people around us are expressing their negative feelings on the topic at hand. But do you know that there is another phrase that contradicts this cliché? The phrase "nothing is set in stone" is the one that many successful people use whenever they try or aim for something and that, with the power of positivity, can make anything in this world possible.
The Power of Positivity
People who are successful use the power of being positive in everything they do. One of the concepts that is practiced in positivity is the law of attraction. The law of attraction might be a scientific concept but it is never truer and more applicable than to our society today. Many researchers believe that what people surround themselves with becomes their own actions and thoughts later on. It might not be obvious or apparent at the start and this surprises many when their actions or feelings are observed later on. This is the reason many sociologists or therapists recommend that individuals should surround themselves with positive things to ward off negative feelings.
Another area of being successful is to envision one's own desires and put it into action. Oftentimes, one wants to achieve something but lacks the desire to see it through. Many people blame others for their failure to reach their goals which produces negative results as well. When one wants to become successful, it is important to focus and put their thoughts into actions and carry the responsibilities that come with achieving what they want in life. By taking responsibilities and initiative, one is more concentrated and motivated to reach their goals in life.
What to do to Harness Positivity
When people want changes to happen to their life, they need to understand that they have to leave their comfort zone and start taking charge of their lives. It may be uncomfortable at the start and even cause friendships to end, but sometimes changes can be awkward but may also be the best thing to happen to your life. Cut the negativity that runs in your life - people who you think will drag you down and negative thoughts and envision what you want your life to be. Surround yourself with positive things, find mentors, visualize what you want and you will wake up one day and realize that you have achieved what you want to do and are happier than you were before.

Possible Or Impossible - You Decide

And Mr. Webster says...
Possible - feasible, practicable, practical, viable, within the bounds/realms of possibility, attainable, achievable, workable, doable
Impossible - not possible, out of the question, unfeasible, impractical, impracticable, nonviable, unworkable, unthinkable, unimaginable, inconceivable, absurd, unattainable, unachievable, unobtainable, unwinnable, hopeless, impractical, implausible, far-fetched, outrageous, preposterous, ridiculous, absurd, impracticable, unworkable, futile.
Notice there are twice as many words that are synonymous for impossible as possible - does this mean anything? Well - read on and you will discover why so many people focus on what is impossible rather than possible.
We all face barriers when we try something new or take a risk but the real question is do we really believe what we are doing or attempting is possible or doable or are we just trying and hoping?
I believe that very few people (given the population of the US) actually believe that what they are trying is possible and I don't care if it's the Wright Brothers, Bill Gates, John F. Kennedy or anyone who has little experience, few contacts, a poor background or just a victim mentality. Imagine what would not exist today if so many people hadn't just kept trying and believing no matter the odds, number of failures or mistakes and the constant ridicule or invalidation from others.
We have what we have today because people didn't quit and never believed what they were aiming for was impossible.
How about you - a new business, a new career, a new relationship, new skills, new anything - wishing and hoping, staying stuck in the past or going for it with gusto?
Thinking about writing a book or taking up a new hobby of painting or sculpture?
Waiting for just the right moment?
As a mentor to over 50 aspiring authors I can tell you every one of them keeps telling me - "I have a book in me." And I keep asking them is this book in you any good? And if it is will it help others? And if it will, how many people is it helping while it's still inside of you? What are you waiting for? It won't get done on its own.
Want a new career or position - and you don't have the experience or skills - go out and get them. Stop dreaming and hoping and start moving in the right direction.
Again, how about you - waiting for the right time, the right connection, the right inspiration, the right something? Stop waiting and erase the word impossible from your vocabulary and then get to work and watch the miracles unfold.

How To Get From Where You Are, to Where You Want to Be "Think, Think, Think"

Do you realize how powerful your thoughts are? Do you recognize the fact that your thoughts pre-pave the way to all that you do? In essence, your thoughts are like a magic wand that you wave over any situation. Whether it's your golf swing, your competitive edge in business, your romantic life or your ability to stay calm under stress, you already have the magic wand!
To unlock your power to transform your current situation, you must raise your awareness of your thoughts. Often, your thoughts are on auto-pilot. On auto-pilot, the wand is wreaking havoc, rather than making magic. Is your inner voice comparing you to others? Are you wondering if they are better than you? Thinner? Happier? When your thoughts are centered on comparison, you begin a downward spiral. What you focus upon, grows. POW! Magic! Where you put your attention nurtures the outcomes you experience.
The good news is, you can shift from using your wand for the "unwanted" to making magic happen. To break the habit of ruminating upon unwanted experiences, you must have the intention of noticing your own thoughts, and examining if your thoughts are pointing you in your desired direction. For example, thoughts of fear are comprised of the anticipation of future pain. Thoughts of guilt, are the playback of unwanted past experiences. Can you imagine a light bulb with a pull chain? Just like the one in your attic? Imagine your mind is your precious, personal attic and shine the light of awareness upon your thoughts. All it takes is intention.
When you are aware of your thoughts, the magic happens as you shift toward thinking of what you want- like success, intimacy or peace. The manifestation of your desires is preceded by your thoughts. Magnify your thoughts by feeling what it is like to have your desire. Your feelings contribute to the activation of your thoughts. Before you know it, thinking and feeling with awareness will usher you to your desired destination.
You know the outcome you want. Obstacles are in the way. Namely, fear. Ready for the work you love, peaceful parenting, vibrant health, happy relationships? Contact Carla for your Breakthrough Session: carla@getcoached.com
