Feeling Stuck? Find Your Vision (The Fun Way)

What do you do when you're feeling stuck?
What do you do when you feel like you're not doing anything? Where it feels like you should be doing something more. Something more meaningful. What happens? How do you get out of it?
How can you take back control of your life when it feels like your wheels are spinning in loose sand. And you aren't getting anywhere.
I think this is a pretty common thing to think and feel. I know I do every now and then. It almost feels like you're wasting the gift of your life.
So how do you find your own purpose?
The great thing is that the answer already lies inside of you. You have the answer. The secret to a fulfilling, high-impact life already exists somewhere inside you. The thing is, you've fallen out of rapport with that part of your mind.
Your inner mind was trying to tell you, but you weren't listening. So after a while, it gave up. This is what it's like to be stuck. This is what causes you to be stuck. Because when you're in harmony with your inner self, the only thing that limits you is time. You'll enough focus and vision. You'll have enough energy and drive. You'll have the commitment, charisma, resourcefulness and everything you need to fulfil your mission.
To fulfil your vision.
So how do you find it? How do you rebuild rapport with yourself?
There's a lot of talk about left-brain versus right-brain thinking. If you're feeling stuck, if you can't see clearly where your future is going, then your too trapped in your left brain. The right brain is really good at seeing the big picture. It's great at feeling a sense of purpose, and connection to everyone and everything.
When you are feeling motivated and driven, that's your right brain speaking to you. And you are listening.
How do you get back in touch with your right brain? I encourage you to meditate. And not just meditate - visualise. I want you to close your eyes and let yourself see something. It doesn't matter what it is. I want you to see anything. Interact with this mental landscape. Really experience it.
Notice your dreams. Every time you wake up, write something down. Even if you can't remember your dreams, write whatever's in your mind. Just write something.
Think bigger than you've ever thought before. What excites you? What terrifies you? If nothing excites or terrifies you, then your left brain has hijacked this topic. Let yourself experience the emotions. Keep striving. Fake the emotions if you have to.
If you don't have a vision for your future, then that is your number one priority. Make it your mission to find your vision. It's in there, in your mind somewhere. All you have to do is tap into that and embrace it with every part of your mind and body.
You can hypnotise yourself to activate your right brain. It's one of the simplest (and most rewarding) outcomes from learning self-hypnosis. If you feel like a passenger in life, take the wheel now.

Reduce Guilt Today Using 3 Top Strategies

Guilt is such an uncomfortable and often "squirmy" feeling. Its discomfort provides great incentive to break free from old patterns, and move ahead with freed-up time and energy.
So here are 3 pointers I find especially helpful when working with my clients who are wrestling with feelings of guilt:
1. Re-frame guilt messages into messages about appropriate responsibility.
When you feel weighed down by your own guilt, or by someone's harsh words, it's wise to carefully explore what's really happening.
"What is truly my responsibility here? If my choices created issues, how can I constructively contribute to improve my end of things?"
Guilt is heavy-handed and reactive. Proactively taking responsibility is even-handed and positive. Which sounds better to you?
Whenever the word "should" creeps into your thoughts, recalibrate your thinking to calmly assess what is truly your responsibility. Your clarity will provide a strong base for your assertiveness.
2. You needn't convince others that you're "not guilty."
Once you decide what your actual area of responsibility is, honor your convictions by letting go of defensiveness. You keep your power in your hands when you clarify that your decisions are based on your assessments, not others'.
Refusing to take on guilt-trips rebalances relationships along more realistic lines. When you challenge "you owe me" attitudes, you may also discover mistaken assumptions of your own.
The clarity you achieve can lay the groundwork for more open-handed interactions. Why not take advantage of this opportunity to update relationships that may have become stiff or stale?
3. You are not responsible for others' responses to your choices.
Are you tempted to feel guilty, argue or apologize if others express strong anger or disappointment with your decision? They may feel that you are responsible for their letdown, and attempt to punish you for not giving in to their demands.
Ground yourself in reality.
Once you take appropriate responsibility, you owe nothing more. Others needn't agree with you or be happy with your decision. Simply stand firm on the issue in question, and remain as neutral and accessible as possible.
Accept that it may take time for others to stop trying to make you feel guilty. Remember, silent self-affirmations are an effective antidote to feelings of guilt.
Eleanor Roosevelt declared,
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
Remember, no one can make you feel guilty without your permission, either.

How to Stop Imposter Syndrome in Her Tracks and Be More UP Yourself

We've all experienced it at some time in our life. Feeling like we're not good enough, like we'll be found out or like we're out of our depth.
Damn you imposter syndrome. She sure can hit hard, especially for us women. It's so common that I included a question in my Cards for Uniqueness pack asking
"When have you ever felt or acted like an imposter?"
I find it fascinating to hear people's responses to the question, particularly if they draw the card during our podcast interview. No matter what their background or story they can always remember a moment when they felt it most poignantly.
The truth is it can happen to anyone at any time regardless of our experience, status, position or title. It can happen professionally and even socially. You know the feeling - that internal knot, that questioning mind, it undermines our competence, capability and confidence And once it's started it can be a slippery slope to go down.
So we want to identify her, call her out and stop her in her tracks when she tries to take a grip. Here are 3 ways to STOP imposter syndrome in her tracks and be more UP Yourself:
"I'm not doing it unless I can do it perfectly."
Stop being a perfectionist princess, she's one of impostor syndromes best friends. This thinking is highly damaging to your self-esteem aka being UP Yourself. I know what you're thinking, but isn't it important to do a good job? Of course it is but setting excessively high goals and standards for yourself will most certainly leave you feeling inadequate and like an imposter when you fail to reach the goal. You set yourself up for failure and then you get to beat yourself up for not measuring up!
Tip: Stop trying to control everything princess. When you miss your ridiculous self-imposed mark on something, do not you accuse yourself of "not being cut out" for you're the task. No-one can be perfect and do perfect work must be 100 per cent of the time.
If you find yourself constantly believing you could've done even better then start owning and celebrating your achievements and taking your mistakes in your stride, viewing them as a natural part of the process. Truth is, there will never be the "perfect time" and your work will never be a perfect 10. The sooner you accept that and be more UPtimistic, the better off you'll be.
"I was just lucky."
So you think you've got lady luck on your side huh? All the time? Seriously.
Be more up yourself woman. You've worked hard to get where you are right? If you keep putting down your successes and achievements to luck, your imposter just might start feeding you BS like you'll be found out and you won't be able to continue your success. Luck is when opportunity and preparation meet and I'm guessing you've been doing a lot of preparation which takes competence and persistence. Sure lady luck can shine on us every once in a while but you've got to remember and recognise all that you've done to contribute to your own success. Bottoms Up!
"Oh it was nothing really."
Imposter syndrome sucks when it stops you from seeing yourself your own brilliance. Especially here in Australia where tall poppy syndrome is rife people are so afraid of appearing up themselves that they are more likely to put themselves down and reduce their efforts to nothing. Problem is good old imposter gets strong every time you do this. It strengthens your neural pathways and her power over you. If you constantly hear yourself saying, "Oh, it was nothing. I'm sure anyone could have done it." Or "It was no big deal, really." Then you know you're falling for the disease of tall poppy. Time to be more UP Yourself - focus on doing your absolute best and when you do and someone complements you simply say "Why thank you." Cue loud applause.
Go in and UP!
Isn't it time you stopped playing small and letting the imposter within you win. You've come too far to not start believing in yourself and worry about what your little inner voice is saying. Being more UP Yourself is a decision. Decide to back yourself because you're worth it.

How To Let Go of Over-Responsibility

We tend to grasp onto what feels familiar, no matter how limiting or uncomfortable. If you're a sensitive person, you might be holding onto the belief that you're responsible for far more than is actually possible. It may feel incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to let go of responsibility.
Many of my clients complain of feeling overwhelmed, and sometimes resentful of the load they're carrying. Fortunately, even in the most challenging circumstances, it's possible to make changes that will lighten the load.
Here are some signs you might be dealing with over-responsibility:
Feeling responsible for Others' Feelings - How often do you walk around not only feeling others' feelings, but also feeling responsible for changing them?
Feeling Responsible for Others' Mistakes - Do you ever feel in some way responsible when a family member, partner, or friend, acts out in anger or other challenging ways?
Taking responsibility for Others' Problems - How often do you step into the role of "the only one" who can solve the problems of the family, office, social setting?
Feeling like you have to fix or save the world - Do you ever feel overly stressed about problems in the world, and responsible to fix things?
How to let go of over-responsibility:
Practice awareness. Become aware of all that you feel responsible for. Notice the difference between the different types of responsibilities you take on. Which ones feel heavy? Which ones feel light? Which ones feel right? Which ones trigger resentment? Which ones feel impossible?
Decide which responsibilities are truly yours. For example, these responsibilities will typically include do-able practices and actions related to your health, your mood, your mind, and certain aspects of your job, family, and social and global situations.
Get clear about responsibilities that are not truly yours. Other people's feelings, behavior, and problems...
Decide which responsibilities you'd like to let go. For example consider letting go of: Trying to fix someone's mood. Taking on too much. The belief that you're responsible for everything and everybody in your life. Feeling responsible for things you cannot control.
Ask for Help -- Asking for help can feel difficult for the overly-responsible person. However, it's crucial. Choose responsibilities to delegate or to share with another. Ask a family member, friend, or colleague for help. You might be surprised... people will often say YES.
Surrender overly-challenging or impossible responsibilities. On a piece of paper, draw a line down the center to form two columns. Label the left-hand column MINE, and write down responsibilities you know you can handle. Label the right-hand column UNIVERSE and write down responsibilities that aren't yours, or those that you struggle with. Imagine surrendering these responsibilities to a greater source of help and inspiration. Imagine the possibility of welcome solutions, and new forms of assistance.
Another way to do this is to write each overly-challenging/impossible responsibility on a small piece of paper. Place them in a box or jar labeled Universe. (or Surrender, or Source, or God, or Goddess... )
Use Meditation and Creative Visualization: Meditate on letting go of extra layers of responsibility and stress. See yourself able to easily let go of what's not yours to handle. Instead of engaging with each responsibility, allow your breath to assist the release. Envision yourself centered in your strength, knowing what's yours, and letting go of the rest.
Use EFT Tapping: EFT tapping is effective for helping to release stress and anxiety when you're feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities. Tapping helps to lower cortisol, and increases blood flow to the thinking part of the brain. This will help you deal more effectively with your challenges.
Let go, surrender, allow.

Marian

Self-Care Strategies to Combat the Stress of the Holiday Season for Medical Professionals

As the holidays approach, this time of year can be filled with mixed emotions for high achieving medical professionals who find themselves in the hospital, clinics, and practices caring for patients instead of spending time with loved ones. It can be more hectic than ever as doctors try to be all things to family and friends while still carrying a full patient load.
Personally, I learned the hard way that this is the time of year when I must become non-negotiable about my daily practices for self-care. In the past I felt I was pulled in many directions. It was challenging for me to say no and set boundaries. I pushed through the holidays working extra shifts while trying to balance the responsibilities of family life. I was overwhelmed and exhausted. I didn't enjoy the holidays. In fact there were times when I couldn't wait until the holidays were over. The mounting stress manifested itself in back pain, which was my wakeup call that it was time to do something different in my life and medical career.
Relief came when I surrendered. When other people are rushing around to finish their holiday shopping, I use this time of year to quietly celebrate myself from a place of non-judgment. It is less about what I haven't done and more about what I have done and what is possible for the future. No more beating myself up for not dropping that 10 pounds or not having paid off more on those student loans or not being in the dream position that I hope to retire from some day. From this new viewpoint I get to enjoy decorating the tree with my children and cooking the holiday dishes we love.
Life is a process. Enjoying more of the process and feeling on purpose is what I am going after, knowing that with the right energy and focus, the rest will show up and reveal itself to me.
If you can relate, please don't despair. When we wreck our brains over what wasn't done we give up our power and fall into the trap of feeling like a victim to our circumstances. Yes, this happens to doctors. We are not immune to human frailties. Instead of falling into the old patterns of negative self talk and criticism, this is the opportune time to re-engage with the daily practices to raise your energy level so that you can tap into the inspiration needed for focused action in 2019.
A few daily practices that change my life are:
· Setting the intention for the day
· Starting the day with gratitude
· Wrapping up the day with celebrating my wins, big and small.
These strategies used consistently, shift your focus and attention to the experiences and the opportunities that contribute to your success. Life begins to flow instead of feeling forced.
As you reflect back over 2018, what were the positive experiences that you had? Maybe it was with a patient or family member you connected with that renewed the meaning of the doctor-patient relationship. What was the lesson from that experience? How can you harness the lesson and carry it into 2019 so that you are more effective and impactful as a doctor?
As we prepare to bring another year to a close and welcome the newness of life that is on the horizon for 2019, what do you need to put in place to support your life and career?

Vegan - May Your Spirit Never Be Tamed!

I am aware that people have different capacity levels for empathy. Some feel deeply about their own family, but struggle with feeling anything for others. Some feel deeply for animals and children, but not so much for adult humans. Some of us shelve things happening in the world just to get by in our own struggling world. I understand that people process information differently, with some needing a barrage of details and facts and others being more intuitive thinkers. Yet, with all of this observation I am still confounded by the blindness and self- centeredness of the human race.
How does the human race not see its self-induced injustices? I am human, I see. As a so called "most evolved" species, how do we not see the injustice of creating enemies with our "us versus them" labeling, of enslaving and killing over 56 million land animals a day, and of thinking that we have a right to dominate? This unconscionable naiveté is beyond my comprehension, and so I too compartmentalize it away to function without being overwhelmed by the farce of my existence. Beyond being vegan, beyond non- violent communication, beyond self-exploration, "how can I use my energy to create a world of peace for all beings?"
We think we have a lot of choices, but in fact our enculturation limits us. We have the illusion of being free, but we are all caught in a smoke screen. A screen or filter that is imposed as babes and perpetuated in the country we live in, and the people with whom we align. This is not freedom this is an enslaved way of thinking which preserves the status quo. When we break away from this entrenched thinking we are met with enormous resistance politically, economically, and emotionally. Is it enough that I question social beliefs, practice veganism and non violent communication, and am open to other ways of being?
Finding our own truth is not easy. Martin Luther King Jr., once said:
"And there comes a time one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular-but one must take it simple because it is right."
Veganism is my truth because it is about creating a Utopia where all peoples, and all animals, can live in peace on a well planet. Consequently, if I want to have an impact on the way others see peace I must be the change I want to see. To optimize my performance in this quest I want to be my best physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
To keep alive the peace within I use this guide as a foundation to optimizing my well-being.
In My Body,
I will treat my body to nutritious foods.
I will avoid highly processed vegan foods loaded with sugar, salt, and fat.
I will learn from vegan nutrition experts (PurePlant Nation, the Buddhist Chef) what fuels my body best.
I will stock my home with essential vegan stables like plant milk, spices, cooked beans, frozen vegetables, sauces, seeds, nuts, grains, a blender, and a steamer.
I will get at least six hours of sleep each evening.
I will drink at least 64 ounces of water a day.
I will exercise regularly to build strength, stamina and flexibility.
In My Thinking,
I will focus on the task at hand, and shut out distractions.
I will sharpen the saw through continual learning.
I will practice win win in all my communications.
I will respect the choices of others.
I will challenge my own assumptions, triggers, and behaviors.
I will practice patience daily by being present and observing.
I will learn to communicate in a non violent manner (Marshall Rosenberg).
I will practice open minded heartful thinking.
I will be a good listener.
I will be a collaborator.
In My Spirit Self,
I will honor myself by staying focused on optimizing my energy.
I will spend time in nature, or visualize a natural setting that infuses me with oneness.
I will be persistent in valuing peace by optimizing my energy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
I will be courageous by listening to my heart, hearing the cries of those without a voice, and by surrounding myself with people and places of positive energy.
The historical tipping point that changes these basic inequities I may never see. I do find solace and inspiration in spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama, Eckhart Tolle, Ram Dass, and many others. I am not alone and either are you. We can help shape the world by being our best and by enlarging our community. This is my quest and this is my bliss.

Trending Confidence And Unstoppable Determination

Several weeks back, a conference left me wishing I was at home alone, without anyone looking at me. I wasn't feeling super well, in fact, I might have actually been on the start of a really nasty illness, but I hadn't realized I was sick yet. I just didn't feel well.
The ultimate push to leave the conference came after I'd sat through the afternoon presentation, and in the process of dressing for dinner, I realized I'd brought everything but the DRESS that went with my outfit. Without it, black slacks just weren't going to cut it, I needed the DRESS. Frustrated, almost angry, and feeling defeated, I left the conference without attending the final evening. I'd just had too much. I was done.
I slipped out after everyone else had gone to the dining room for dinner.
Later, with my phone dinging from text messages asking where I was, I made a quick stop to grab a sandwich at a drive through, and looked through the texts. One in particular stood out...
"Hey, I just checked at the desk when I couldn't find you and they said you checked out. Are you okay? I was hoping we could have a drink tonight after the final presentation!"
I was already at the southern edge of town, headed home, and not willing to drive back. I responded with a quick. "I'll be okay. I just needed some space. I'll call tomorrow." And through tears, I paid for my sandwich and drove home. I don't think I ever bothered to eat the sandwich. I was feeling too far down at the time... I needed, really needed, to hear the words from a friend "I was hoping we could have a drink tonight after the presentation."
You see...
Throughout the entire event, I'd felt invisible. I'd been feeling as if I didn't really matter to anyone there. I really had felt as if my presence there was detrimental to the purpose of the event. And because I didn't FEEL good, I'd allowed these negative feelings to drive me away from the final event, which most likely would have shifted my thinking. Why? Because my friend had noticed me, and was planning to ask me to join him for a drink.
We'd talked earlier, but only in groups. And being a bit shy, I had stood in the background, allowing others to "make the impressions" and I wasn't sharing my valuable message with anyone. I was holding back.
Two hours later, at home, I keyed in the video that had been loaded from the final portion of the event and watched as the speaker told "my story" from his perspective. He didn't know he was telling my story. He thought he was telling his own story.
He thought he was sharing the story of a man who didn't feel worthy of sharing his message, because others were sharing the message too. The words he spoke were like prods to my heart, shocking me into the reality that we're all just traveling through this world with our own problems, dealing with our own realities, and none of us has perfected the process. But we don't have to accept that lonely, over the edge feeling of defeat that pushes us into a corner, when we don't feel acknowledged, recognized, or visible.
Imagine for a moment if you looked around the room, behind the smiles that are visible and saw the soul of others as they truly are... Would they be the confident person you see, in the perfectly selected outfit, pressed and pristine, smiling with unstoppable determination? Or would they be a broken, hurting soul, who accidentally left the perfect dress at home in the closet and packed EVERY OTHER SINGLE ITEM for her outfit, and chose a different one for the night?
During the following week, my "not feeling good" required a Dr. visit, and the realization that I'd missed out on a night of fun with a friend that would have meant the world to me. But more... That next week gave me insight into a reality that shook me to the core.
I'm more than the perfect outfit. I'm anything but invisible. My life has meaning. I'm a valuable person, with a message that nobody else has been given, and I'm intended to share that message. Whether there's a crowded room of listeners, or a table for two with a semi-polite stranger on the other side, I have a purpose. I can be confident that my message has meaning. And if I don't share my message with others, it might never be heard.
If you're allowing your message to be stifled because you think you're somehow unworthy, invisible, or not the perfect messenger... STOP. Rethink this process, and rethink who you are. YOU have a purpose. You have a message. And YOU are the only one given the message you have, who can deliver your message to the people who will listen to you. There's someone out there, at least one person who NEEDS to hear the message you're given. They need YOU.
Fight for it. Overcome STUFF that might take you out of the running. Grab onto some of that trending confidence, unstoppable determination, and overcome stuff that would prevent you from delivering your message to the one person who needs to hear it from you!
Do what you've been sent here to do - share your message, with confidence.
When what's inside you is struggling to get out, you might need to hear from someone who has overcome the "stuff" that holds you back. You might need direction, assistance, and help to get to your own place of power. I can help you with that, because I know what it takes to overcome stuff.
