Once I became sick and tired of being teased by my former name, I decided to do something about it... I changed my name. Changing my birth name to a name I love and cherish was the most exhilarating thing I have ever done. Well not quite, becoming an FA (Flight Attendant) was the most rewarding in my career.
Anyway, I had been looking over a name to give myself for years. My birth name was dull, outdated, and was not reflective of my personality. Plus, it had been used in a few movies and television sitcoms and it was not an exciting name to have. Both my parents probably believed it was a great name at the time, but that was then and this is now. Having my name changed has not changed me, but it has given me a boost of self-esteem I did not have before my name became Bria.
Since I am also African-American and did my DNA, I learned that I am 39% African, so I gave myself an African middle name as well. But on paper, I will only use the middle initial not the full name. My former name did not have a middle name and when I looked up my name on Google some other person with that name appeared. So, if an employer just wanted to randomly look me up they would see another woman altogether.
Someone asked me how I chose the name, Bria. Years ago, I started looking at baby books to see which names were popular and which ones might fit me more appropriately. I knew I didn't want a name that would be ethnic sounding like; Keesha, Shasheena, or Kenya. I chose a name that had no identifying background at all. I also didn't want it to have lots of letters. So, the name Bria with four letters hit the nail on the head. And combined with my last name it has twelve letters in it instead of thirteen like my last one did. Overall I'm happy with it.
It has been a daunting task to get the Social Security Administration to change the social security card. It also took longer than expected for the County Clerk's Office to make the change and mail me the Certification signed by the judge to make it official. My largest duty now it to change it within every legal entity that I can. I cannot go to the DMV with the old name. I can't use my passport with the old name. I can't get on a flight with an old driver's license. Getting an updated social security card is taking the longest period of time. I also have to change my college diploma's and degrees and transcripts in case someone wants to see those. It's going to take all summer to get it done.
If you're thinking about embarking upon a name change, make sure you do your research and use the name for a while before sending it to the County Clerk's office to be changed permanently. I read many baby books and saw what names were appropriate and fit my taste. If this is something you've always wanted to do, there is no time like the present to get it done. I have never been happier!
